Announcing the LocalStack for Students Plan
LocalStack, in partnership with GitHub Education, has launched a new, free plan for students to enable them to have access to the full range of AWS services and features supported in our emulators for learning.
A knowledge of AWS and serverless can be an extremely marketable skill, but learning it hasn’t always been easy, particularly because of concerns around cost and risk. What happens if, the course of learning, I make a mistake, and what if that costs me money that I can’t afford?
LocalStack has always been an ideal tool for learners because it eliminates that risk. Since you are playing with emulated services, not real AWS, screwing up has zero cost and zero risk. This gives you the freedom to learn and explore that is key to skill-building.
While LocalStack has always offered a free and open-source Community Edition with 30+ services you could use to learn and explore as a student, we wanted to give students access the full breadth of LocalStack’s emulator as well as some of our more advanced features to help unleash their full learning potential. That’s why we’re excited to announce that, in partnership with GitHub Education’s Student Developer Pack we have launched the LocalStack for Students plan.
What’s in the LocalStack for Students Plan?
The LocalStack for Students plan gives students access to the entire list of supported services in the LocalStack for AWS emulator. From a service emulator standpoint, students get the equivalent of our Ultimate plan. This includes all of the core serverless services in our free plan as well as more advanced services, including services like Elastic Container Service (ECS), Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), Bedrock and more.
In addition, students can utilize the advanced capabilities of LocalStack including CI integration (with included CI credits), local and cloud persistence, IAM policy streams and so much more.
You can find the full details on everything the plan includes in our Licensing and Tiers documentation.
How do I get access to LocalStack for Students?
First things first, you must be a verified learner with GitHub Education. If you are not already a verified learner, this requires a verification process via your GitHub account that validates that you are a student actively enrolled in a program.
Verified learners in the GitHub Student Developer Pack now have free access to all our most advanced AWS! If you already have a LocalStack account, you can log in to your account and reach out to support via chat for help to switch to our student plan. If you’re a new LocalStack user, you will be guided to create your student plan account by following this link. Your LocalStack student subscription is valid so long as you’re a verified learner through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.
Let’s Learn Some AWS!

Ok. We can’t actually promise you that LocalStack will teach you AWS as quickly and easily as Neo learned kung fu. There’s a lot to learn! But it will make it easy and free – plus you can learn just on your laptop! So, if you are a student, we encourage you to try LocalStack for free and get learning.
